가상현실 기술은 사용자에게 더 높은 몰입감을 제공한다는 점에서 영상이나 비디오 게임 같은 다른 디지털 미디어와 다르게 분류된다. 가상현실 기술이 빠르게 발전함에 따라 사람 대 사람간의 상호작용 매체로 활용될 수 있는 가능성도 높아지고 있다. 따라서 가상현실에서 사람들의 사회적-감정적 상호작용 행동양상을 이해하는 일이 중요해지고 있다. 현재의 가상현실 기술은 정밀한 모션트래킹과 안구추적이 가능해지면서 사용자들이 더욱 현실적인 몸동작을 사용해 상호작용 할 수 있다. 현실 세계에서 사람들 간 사회적 소통을 할 때에는 얼굴표정을 활용한 비언어적 표현이 중요한 역할을 하는데, 눈길(Gaze direction) 혹은 눈맞춤(Eye contact)에 집중하여 연구하고자 한다.
사회적 상호작용에서 우리는 상대방의 의도와 동기, 혹은 집중도를 눈길을 통해 파악하는 성향이 있다. 다른 사람이 그의 눈길을 다른 곳으로 돌리면 우리는 자연스럽게 그 곳에 무언가가 있어서 바라본다고 생각하거나 아니면 그 사람이 사회적 상호작용을 하고싶어 하지 않는다고 판단한다. 그와 다르게 만약 다른 사람이 나의 눈을 똑바로 응시한다면, 사회적 맥락에 따라 우리는 불편함을 느낄 수도 있고 또는 그 사람과 더욱 깊은 감정적 교류를 나누는 중이라고 생각할 수도 있다. 똑바로 쳐다보는 시선은 사람의 집중도를 확 잡아끌게 하는 힘이 있다. 실제로 본인을 향한 똑바른 시선을 인지했을 때, 심장박동수와 같은 생체학적 요소가 영향을 받는다는 연구 결과들이 있다. 흥미로운 사실은, 이러한 시선이 실제 사람의 시선(라이브)으로 자극이 주어졌을 때만 생체학적 반응이 일어나고 사진이나 비디오로 제시되었을 때는 일어나지 않는다는 점이다. 연구결과에 따르면 상호적인 시선에만 반응을 보인다고 한다. Myllyneva and Hieranen(2015)의 실험에 따르면 피실험자들이 상대방 모델이 자신을 보고있다고 믿을 때에 P3 event-related brain potential과 SCRs 측정치가 달라졌다고 한다. 즉, 자신이 다른사람의 주의의 타겟이 될 때 이와 같은 반응이 나타난다는 것이다. 여러 연구에 따르면 가상현실 내에서 다른 유저의 아바타와 하는 눈맞춤 역시 비슷한 반응을 보인다. 가상현실 혹은 현실 세계에서 똑바른 응시와 시선 회피 이렇게 두 가지 변수가 사람에게 미치는 영향을 알아보는 실험은 많았지만, 두 사용자의 실시간 상호작용(눈맞춤)과 미리 제작된 pre-animated avatar와의 상호작용(눈맞춤)에 대한 연구는 없었다. 가상현실 컨텐츠를 제작할 때, 비용을 줄이기 위해 라이브가 아니라 미리 제작된, 혹은 프로그램된 아바타를 사용하는 경우가 많은데, 이러한 경우에도 사용자들이 “상대방이 나를 보고 있다” 는 느낌을 받을 수 있는지 실험을 통해 알아보고자 한다

It is an exquisite organ — its main purpose is to collect information. That ability has given us an evolutionary/survival advantage wherein we can not only assess for threats as far away as the horizon, but also decode the behavior, intentions, and body language of those close to us.
